14th Star Brewing

And those textbooks are right; especially about the 1791 part. Today, in Franklin County, Vermont, Army veteran Steve Gagner is honoring his home state and passion—brewing great beer — with 14th Star Brewing Co. 14th Star is Steve’s 1,200-square-foot nanobrewery on Lower Newton Street, in St. Albans City. What makes our beer special is that we can let our imaginations go – brewing beers that many in the area have never tried or heard about. We’re also open to suggestions. If you have a suggestion on a beer we should brew, shoot us an email steve@14thstarbrewing.com. We look forward to continuing to provide the greater St Albans area with quality craft beer. Cheers!

Harpoon Brewery
336 Ruth Carney Drive
Windsor, VERMONT
802.674.5491

We started the Harpoon Brewery in 1986 because-like today-we loved beer and wanted more quality choices. There was only one problem: we were beer lovers, not brewers. We knew what we wanted to drink, but we needed some help brewing it. So we enlisted our first brewer, took over some warehouse space on the Boston waterfront, and began introducing fresh, local craft beer to Boston drinkers. We tried to do it in a way that captured the spirit of fun that had brought us to beer in the first place. From that warehouse, surrounded by fish companies on the docks of South Boston (neighboring what is now the Seaport District), we couldn’t imagine that craft brewing would become what it has today. We look forward to having a beer with you soon!

Kingdom Brewing
353 Coburn Hill Road
Newport, VERMONT
802.334.7096

Kingdom Brewing is located high atop Coburn Hill in the town of Newpoer Center, just a half mile past the northern most point of Route 100 on 105 East. The northern most point of Route 100 can be found about 4 miles southwest of Lake Memphremagog. Brian and Jenn Cook created Kingdom Brewing with the intent to brew terrific craft beers from a wide variety of locally produced ingredients. Starting with American grown grains, they add locally produced ingredients such as maple sap, spruce tips or apples to create a variety of light to robust seasonal beers. In addition to their homegrown philosophy, the Cooks run Kingdom Brewing in the most environmentally friendly way possible. One common problem for many brewers is finding a way to dispose of the mash left over from the brewing process. The Black Angus beef herd on the Cook’s farm happily dispose of the spent grains for them. Additionally, the brewery uses a geo-thermal type of fermentation cooling system. See what’s brewing on Facebook!

Long Trail Brewing Company has been a caretaker of Vermont craft since 1989.

Each year more varietals are added to each vineyard. Due to its proximity to Lake Champlain, Sugarbush Vineyard, located in Colchester, has a slightly extended growing season. La Garagista Farm & Winery
61 Central Street
Woodstock, Vermont
802.291.1295

Our wines are an expression of the season. Each vintage may herald slightly different bottlings, and even wines that we tend to make every year will show variation from vintage to vintage. We work in the field and cellar as minimally as possible, as guides and companions. We believe that Terroir* encompasses geology, geography, microclimate, varietal, culture, and the human hand. Wine cannot make itself just like a dish of roasted carrots or an aged cow’s milk cheese cannot. Our job is to accompany and support the wine throughout its life in the vineyard and our cantina. Our fruit is handpicked and sorted, foot crushed through pigeage. We employ glass demijohns and old barrels. We rely on the native yeast found on our fruit, the result of a happy marriage of field and fermentation. We use little to no sulphite at bottling. It depends on the wine and the season.

*Terroir (Fr) refers to the environmental factors, such as soil and climate, that give a wine its unique flavor and aroma.

Shelburne Vineyard
6308 Shelburne Rd
Shelburne, Vermont 05482
802.985.8222

It all started 35 years ago, when Ken Albert planted grapes in his backyard while working as an engineer at IBM. Inspired by the new wine industry he discovered on trips for IBM to Quebec, he leased 3 acres of land from Shelburne farms and began his commercial vineyard venture believing that viticulture and winemaking could be a success in Vermont. Scott Prom, a Shelburne neighbor, joined as a partner early on. Aided by decades of Ken’s backyard grape growing experience and Scott’s home winemaking, the first commercial vintage was released in 2000.

The LEED-designed winery, opened in Feb 2008 surrounded by Marquette vines now stands welcoming the public seven days a week. The operation includes 17 acres of grapes, mostly the super hardy Minnesota hybrids, with a small planting of Riesling and Vidal Blanc.

The winery is producing reds, whites, rosés, and ice wines, many of which have earned “Best in Category” gold medals in International competitions.
