Chasing “The Fish” on the Battenkill: A Guest’s Unforgettable Fly-Fishing Experience

Brown Trout

There’s something timeless about fly fishing on Vermont’s Battenkill River—where quiet patience meets the pulse of the water, and nature rewards those who listen closely. Yesterday, one of our guests at the Inn at Ormsby Hill experienced that magic firsthand, landing a beautiful wild brown trout in what can only be described as a perfect early spring day in Manchester.

Just 15 minutes from our front door, a local Orvis-endorsed guide with Trico and Fly Haus led the guest to a stretch of the Battenkill tucked beside one of Vermont’s iconic red covered bridges. With the Green Mountains budding in the background and the river glinting in the April sun, it was a setting made for memories.

“The river was cool and invigorating,” the guest shared, still riding the adrenaline from the catch. “The trout fought hard—this was the fish.”

“The fish”—a strong, golden brown trout marked with vibrant red spots—was a true prize of the Battenkill. With the help of a knowledgeable local guide, the guest navigated the river’s currents and classic pocket water with precision. The moment was made all the more special by the deep fly-fishing heritage that surrounds Manchester.

A River with History

The Battenkill isn’t just a beautiful place to cast a line—it’s a cornerstone of American fly fishing. The river has long drawn anglers from across the country with its wild trout population and challenging conditions. Its reputation was cemented through the work of Orvis, the iconic fly-fishing outfitter founded right here in Manchester in 1856.

Today, visitors can still explore that legacy. No trip to Manchester is complete without a stop at Orvis—whether to admire their flagship store, take in a casting demo, or walk through the American Museum of Fly Fishing, located just around the corner. The museum celebrates the cultural and sporting traditions of fly fishing, including the role the Battenkill has played in shaping generations of anglers.

Local Knowledge, Lasting Memories

While Orvis offers deep-rooted tradition, the recently opened Fly Haus brings a boutique energy to Manchester’s fly-fishing scene. This small shop, run by passionate locals, features both new and consignment gear, and serves as a hub for connecting anglers with expert guides who know the Battenkill’s currents like the back of their hand.

It was through Fly Haus and Trico that our guest booked their unforgettable experience—an ideal way for anyone staying at the Inn to dive into the region’s sporting spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a curious beginner, Manchester offers everything you need to get on the water.
